Week 3
After reading the Academic Study Techniques found here: https://www.academictips.org/acad/index.html, one of the things I learned that would help me with my note-taking would be to use the 2-6 Method. This Method has you separate the paper into a smaller left column and a much larger section on the right. This allows you to call out major points or things you think you will be tested on as well as write headings to make it easier for you to find things when studying for quizzes and tests.
One of the things we learned this week was about the CS curriculum at CSUMB and we researched each class as a team and described each class in our own words. We also learned about the basics of Project Management and how they keep projects on task, on budget, and on time as best they can. Another thing we learned about is Ethical Frameworks and how they can be applied to argue different sides of a topic. We discussed the Edward Snowden case where he leaked classified documents about the government spying on its own citizens plus many others. He thought it was better for the greater good than upholding his duty of keeping government secrets just that, a secret. The Ethical Framework Utilitarianism is what I thought most applied which is in a general sense "We should act always so as to produce the greatest good for the greatest number."
I learned that a code portfolio is much more important than a GPA and Resume as it lets potential employers directly judge your ability. Also being able to communicate your technical ideas to non-technical people is a must in today's world. Being familiar with engineering, the Unix philosophy, and being able to do Systems Administration is very important as well.
After reading the CSUMB CS Online Code of Integrity, it is clear to me that using code solutions from outside sources is the same as plagiarising a research paper. If you do receive help from people, other than an instructor or the TA, then you must cite what kind of help you received and from who you received it.
Hey Mike,
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with the usefulness of the 2-6 method. Just like in programming, sectioning things out makes things more organized and easy to read. Whenever I take notes I tend to follow the same principal that I would use when coding.
Hi Mike I never tried that method but I will definitely try it this weekend for note taking I have been using my iPad and Notion as well for my coding notes. It helps me to have a system in place note taking is really important for me when it comes to studying it helps me process what I am learning and I am always on the hunt for different ways to improve it. Thank you for sharing your method!
